Agassiz Youth Centre is in the process of preparing for many new staff members who will be needed when the 48-bed facility under construction is completed in the fall.
Marvin Orchard, superintendent of Agassiz Youth Centre, confirmed between 20 to 30 juvenile counsellors are being trained in Winnipeg for work at the centre when the new medium-security unit is completed, likely by November.
"We have a new unit opening this fall with 48 new beds and we require a lot of additional staff," said Orchard in an interview on Thursday.
The new facility will bring the available capacity of beds at Agassiz up to 148 when it is completed.
There will be many other positions to be filled also, including additional teachers, a registered nurse, a mental health nurse, a chaplain, and an aboriginal spiritual care giver, to accommodate the increased population of inmates at the facility.
