Manitoba Hydro has made its choice as to where it wants to build the new high voltage transmission line known as BiPole III.
Portage la Prairie MLA David Faurschou said he has concerns about Manitoba Hydro's preferred route for a number of reasons. He said with the route now 479 kilometres longer than the alternate eastern route, it will mean added costs of $17 million of power loss, because of the extra distance the route covers.
Hydro's Preliminary Preferred Route is for the line to come from the west side of Lake Manitoba heading south to cross Highway 2 to the west of St. Claude and pass to the south of the village as it heads to the east.
BiPole III then crosses Highway 13 to the south of Elm Creek as the line makes it continues its way through the Rural Municipality of Grey and into the RM of Macdonald. Then BiPole II will pass to the north of Brunkild and make its way to Red River.
Began process in 2008
Originally the electricity utility looked at building BiPole III along the east side of Lake Winnipeg. The NDP government nixed the idea citing concerns the line would cross through a proposed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
