The provincial government is over half-way through its five-year plan for child care, but more spaces are still needed, said a Portage la Prairie daycare director.
"My waiting right now has probably got about anywhere from 75 to 100 people waiting," said Tammy Bogue, director of Wee World Day Care Centre in Portage.
Bogue said her centre is licensed for 50 children, any more would exceed occupancy regulations for their building.
Her problem is not unique.
"Most of the centres here in Portage probably have a good 70 people waiting for child care," she said.
Bogue thinks the demand for day care has risen partly because more families have both parents working, but also because of a general increase and appreciation for the service early child care provides.
