Southport board looking for Feller’s replacement as CEO opts to step down next year

File photo -- Southport CEO Barry Feller talks to guests in the Hilly Brown Building at Southport in October during a funding announcement for new student accommodation at Southport. Feller will be stepping down as CEO in January 2010.

The Southport board of directors hopes to have a new CEO in place by January 2010, the board's chair said.

"We have employed a recruiting firm to assist us to find a new CEO," chair Hayden Henwood noted.

That recruiting firm is the Legacy Bowes Group out of Winnipeg, which will help find a replacement for outgoing CEO Barry Feller, who is stepping down next year.

"I think he's been an exciting and visionary CEO," Henwood said of Feller, who has been the CEO at Southport for about 6.5 years.

Of his accomplishments there, Henwood pointed to the demolition of the old Hangars 1, 2 and 3 a few years ago and their replacement with the new Hangars 1 and 2, as well as the modernization of the sewer and water infrastructure on the former air force base.

Henwood said neither he nor the board saw the move to step down coming from Feller.

"I think it was a surprise to the whole board," he said.

Feller said his stepping down as CEO was not a retirement but that he was merely moving on to pursue some other personal business interests.

Feller also pointed to new development and infrastructure as being a big accomplishment during his tenure there.

"I'm very pleased that we were able to see the development of some new infrastructure," the outgoing CEO said.
