Friendship Centre has host of activities on for Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and in the spirit of prevention, the Portage Friendship Centre is hosting activities all month long.

"We've got something planned for pretty much every day of the month," executive director Stuart Alcorn said Thursday.

The focus of the centre is on active living and prevention, Alcorn noted.

Among the activities are nutrition counselling with dietitian Barbara Sanders Nov. 17 and 24, and an exercise facility that has a universal gym, treadmill, elliptical, recumbent and exercise bikes that is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. except for Nov. 10 and 11 when the centre is closed for Remembrance Day.

The centre also has a walking group from 1:30-2 p.m. Nov. 6, 19 and 27.

Alcorn said it's important for people to be aware of diabetes because it is on the rise across the country and people should get tested if they have a family history of the disease.

"Prevention is the best benefit," he added.
