All eyes will be on Portage la Prairie starting Friday for an event to promote the 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games.

On Friday and Saturday there will be a variety of activities taking place throughout Portage aimed to increase awareness about the games, which will be held in March.

The event kicks off with a pork barbecue at the Portage Sport and Cultural Association hall, next to Cinema Centre from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday. Sami Jo Small, a distinguished women's hockey goalkeeper, who won the gold medal with Team Canada in the 2002 Olympics, will be making an appearance as part of the meet and greet.

"We thought we would ask her to come to be part of it, to tie her in with the Olympics and the Manitoba Games," said Paul Harland, games co-ordinator for the 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games. "Obviously, they are in the same timeframe and close together. So we wanted to bring awareness, and bring the community together, and make a little more awareness for the Games in March."

Manitoba Pork is providing the free pork on a bun lunch.

Harland hopes the community will drop by to meet Small and view her gold medal.

There will also be an opportunity for more volunteers to sign up to help out during the Manitoba Winter Games in Portage from March 7-13.

Then at 1:15 p.m., Small will hit the stage as she speaks to middle years students at Ecole Arthur Meighen School and later at 2 p.m. at Portage Collegiate Institute.

At 3 p.m. she heads to Centennial Arena to skate with the Portage Terriers and then take part in an autograph session.

Then at 8 p.m., Small will be the guest speaker at an invitation-only VIP reception for the Manitoba Winter Games at Canad Inns.
