Kids spend a day on the job in the work world

Staff photo by Angela Brown....Grade 9 student Stephanie Klassen (holding book) joins assistant director Pam Anderson, right, with children at Westend Day Care Centre Inc. in Portage la Prairie on Wednesday for Take Your Kids To Work Day.

Some kids in Portage la Prairie had a chance to fasttrack into the future on Wednesday and find out what it would be like to spend a day as professionals in the workforce.

It was all a part of Take Your Kids to Work Day, in recognition of Career Week in Manitoba.

Grade 9 students had a chance to roll up their sleeves and put away their textbooks while they had a little on-the-job training.

Portage Collegiate Institute student Stephanie Klassen spent the day learning what it is like to work at a day care, joining her mother on the job at Westend Daycare Centre Inc. in Portage.

She noted she is undetermined whether she wants to be an early childhood education (ECE) professional, a veterinarian or a hairstylist.

The youth commented this was her first time spending the entire day at the day care that cares for up to 70 children at one time, from 18 months to 12 years of age.

Klassen enjoys the work because it allows her to be with children. She spent the day reading to them, showing them games and keeping them busy.

PCI career counsellor Carol Stewart commented the Take Your Kids to Work Day is a valuable opportunity for kids to join their parents at their jobs or just go to a company to find out what their dream job may entail.

"It is a real important initiative," she said. "They (the students) hopefully develop an appreciation and they value the importance of staying in school and getting a high school diploma. That's key. Not everyone is going to go to university or college, but the opportunities without a Grade 12 diploma are not great."
